Para ello, trabó amistad con diez hombres del pueblo llano; no eran ciudadanos influyentes, pero habían sido miembros del partido Nazi. Partiendo de las conversaciones que mantuvo con sus «amigos» nazis, a quienes dedica este libro, Mayer expuso de manera brillante las justificaciones espúreas, la ceguera voluntaria y la abdicación moral que permitieron al pueblo alemán aplaudir o mantener un silencio cómplice ante el ascenso del nazismo.Creían que eran libres, finalista del National Book Award en 1956, tuvo poca repercusión en un momento en el que la gente prefería olvidar el horror reciente de la guerra. Con el tiempo se ha convertido en un clásico que, como los estudios de Hannah Arendt, ilumina tanto el pasado como las derivas autoritarias y populistas del presente. Ahora se publica por primera vez en castellano con un prólogo del historiador Richard J.
